Every year many people decide they want to own there own business. This seems like the likely way to reach their financial dreams. In many cases this can be correct. Also, many of these people decide they want to enter the competitive field of carpet cleaning. Carpet cleaning can be a great business if you enter into the field with the proper knowledge. One of the most important decisions a prospective carpet cleaning business owner can make is whether or not to become a franchise.

A franchise has a lot to offer a prospective carpet cleaner. Many franchises will have specialty equipment only available to their franchises. In addition, many of these franchises have patented cleaning solutions as an added bonus. Franchises will provide all the training necessary to provide carpet cleaning services including the actual cleaning, management of the business, and marketing help. Most franchisors allow franchises to use their well known brand names.

However, there are drawbacks to franchises. First, they tend to be more expensive to start than an independent business. Franchises will require an up front payment for training plus ongoing royalties that will either be calculated as a percentage of sales or a flat rate. Also, many franchisors require franchisees to purchase their equipment and cleaning supplies from them at inflated prices. Another drawback is that your business decisions often times must be approved by the franchisor.

As an independent carpet cleaner you can enjoy much more freedom. If you would like to service an area or purchase a certain brand of equipment you are not limited by a franchisor. Also, the cost to start an independent company will be greatly reduced since you will be avoiding franchise fees. In addition, independents can enjoy an easier sales process in the future. Many franchises will place certain requirements on franchises when selling. The franchisor may have to interview and approve the buyer in addition to requiring certain liquid cash requirements and net worth. These kinds of requirements can greatly reduce the pool of buyers you have to choose from.

The downside of being an independent carpet cleaner is the fact that you will be entering the field with no known brand. Most franchises will have well known names that lend credibility to a business. Building trust with consumers is something that can take many years to achieve. Also, you will be responsible for either training yourself or seeking out comprehensive training from an outside source. Finally, certain patented equipment can have advantages over what will be available to you as an independent.

This is just one of the many key decisions that you will face when starting a carpet cleaning business. Others, such as whether you should specialize as a commercial carpet cleaning business will also have to be addressed. Another important factor in the success of your business will be a good carpet cleaning business plan. All these decisions should be factored together to arrive at the best solutions for your situation.
