1. Safety measures

Always remember to put on protective gears before you begin carpet mold removal. Wear disposable clothing, goggles, facemask and long rubber gloves to protect yourself from the harmful mold spores. Isolate the mold infested materials and items from the rest of your house. You may consider treating those infected materials in a containment area.
Do not carry the mold-infested carpet around your house, doing this will spread the mold spores and infect other places and materials in your house.

2. Mold damage evaluation

Before you begin the process of carpet mold removal, you need to evaluate the severity of the infestation. For carpet with mold infestation that involves area larger than 10 square feet, you need to hire professional for the cleaning job. Sometimes, the infection is so serious that you should discard the whole carpet and replace with a new one. Usually carpets that have been soaked through due to flooding are hard to salvage. In this case, pull up the old carpet slowly and seal it in a sturdy plastic bag to be disposed off. Remember to clean the area and allows it to dry completely before laying a new carpet. Vacuuming does help to catch mold spores that float in the air.

3. Mold cleaning

When mold contamination is minor, it is always possible to do it yourself. Get hold of a steam-cleaning machine; clean the infected area with powerful detergent like Lysol.
You may need to repeat the process for stubborn mold stains. Scrub hard with a sturdy brush to get rid of the carpet mold and then rinse well with water. Allows the area to dry thoroughly after cleaning. One good suggestion is to disinfect the carpet by spraying undiluted white vinegar and let it dry entirely to prevent future mold growth.
